Beginnings

Updated: Nov 6, 2021

Hello there!

My name is Luis. I'm the person behind "We Are the Prdct".

“We Are the Prdct“ is a music project, it's a collection of all of the songs I've written and will write... so it's a band. “We Are the Prdct” is really... a one-man band.

I've been writing my music for the past 10 years, but have released very, very little music. So I finally decided it was time to stop postponing sharing my music, even if it’s for only a small corner of the world, or just for myself.

In order to tell you about my music, I thought I'd shared a little bit of who I am.

Past

I’m originally from Mexico, and I came back to live in Mexico a couple of years ago, after living most of my life abroad. In my time I was away I:

  • Learned english at a really young age.

  • Learned to play guitar by learning Green Day, Blink-182, and Metallica songs.

  • Discovered the Foo Fighters.

  • Moved to Chicago.

  • Joined a band.

  • Got into the startup world.

  • Played the Double Door.

  • And moved back to Mexico.

  • And I continue to work in tech.

But now that I was back, I was having a hard time adjusting to Mexico. Some adjustments where bigger things, like language. After so many years of speaking english consistently at work, school and with friends, I had an accent... I didn't speak in Mexico City colloquialism. I was a Mexican with an accent when speaking Spanish. That was a point of ridicule. Then there were smaller things, like I didn't know back then whether quesadillas had cheese or not was a matter of national debate (they have cheese, btw).

Another reason why moving back to Mexico was tough was, I didn’t know anyone. I moved to the city for a job, but I had no friends, only some family. And I was never really good at making friends. In all of the moves across cities, I always struggled to make friendships. I can be a very private person when I'm in a new situation, and this time was no different. Despite these obstacles, I've been able to create a few lasting friendships, I've been able to learn new skills, change careers while continuing to work in tech, and I have continued to postpone sharing my music.

There were other things along the way, like failures, disappointment, heartaches, love, and joy. But that'll be a story for another day.

Present

Like millions of other millennials, I turned 30 in 2021. It was the combination of going through a global pandemic, quarantining, recently learning how to code software, and the sinking feeling of turning 30 that finally... made me get off my ass and start recording music. The pandemic and quarantine made me slow down and reflect. Learning to code gave me the confidence to pick up learning audio production. So a couple of Udemy courses and weeks later, I had my first recordings.

Even after having finished the recordings, I realize they aren’t perfect or even studio quality. And for that reason, I have doubted myself and haven’t wanted to share them. Maybe all musicians doubt themselves when releasing music, I don’t know. The recordings aren't perfect. But they are done. And for me right now, done is better than perfect.

I'll be releasing the first batch of songs in the following weeks. These recordings were made during the covid19 pandemic. Some of the songs you'll hear are at least a decade old.

You might label my music as just "rock music". Maybe ”pop punk”, “alternative” or maybe even ”indie”. All I can say is these are the songs I've written. These are the songs that express what I've felt, what I've thought and what I've gone through.

This is my medium. "We Are The Prdct" is the vehicle and the space where I share my music. What I know is I'll do my best to continue recording and releasing. Recording and releasing. If times get better, hopefully I'll even go to a local open mic, play some songs. Otherwise, I've put off a reddit live performance that I shouldn't put off for much longer, and I’ll perform through these online forums.

Future

As far as what the future holds... my goal is really just to release and share my music consistently. If I'm lucky, I'll get to play live again, maybe even in a full band, and along the way maybe I’ll meet some cool people as well. And beyond that?

If we dare dream, it'd be amazing to play Lollapalooza, Glastonbury, or maybe even open for the Foo Fighters. And I don't know who else, but I think it'd be rad to reunite +44. Not sure how I'll pull any of the above off, but I'll take it one day at a time.

So today…

Will be like any other day. I'll wake up, make breakfast, drink my coffee, and, do some work. I’m very lucky to be able to work remotely, so in between any break I may have, I'll pick up my bass or my guitar, and I'll either continue recording the next batch of songs, or I'll maybe work on something new.

Then it's lunch time, so gotta cook again. And maybe I'll maybe have another cup of coffee, though I am trying to consume less coffee. Then work and meetings until the end of the 9-5 working day. Exercise, I've found, does help me keep my sanity so a quick workout or outdoor you will happen in the evening. After dinner and relaxing, I work on my personal projects, where “we are the Prdct” falls in. It's when I continue working on music and writing these kinds of articles. It's when I schedule my songs to be released. Maybe someday I'll do music full-time, but in the meantime, I'm happy with where I am.

So, hope you enjoy the songs. And join me in this journey!

Feel free to write any comments and I'll happily reply! Thanks for taking the time to finish reading this post. Once the songs are published, I'll link them here.
